Men’s Golf Team Opens Season at Erin Hills Intercollegiate

The seventh-ranked UCLA men’s golf team opens the 2013-14 season at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, Oct. 6-8, in Erin, WI.
The Bruins are the top-ranked team in the 14-team field, according the Sept. 30 Golf Coaches Assn. of America poll. Oklahoma (10th) and Stanford (11th) were also ranked in the GCAA poll. SMU (31st) and Oregon State (45th) were ranked in the most recent GolfWeek poll.
Five teams in the field – Stanford, UCLA, Michigan, Oklahoma and SMU -- have won a combined 13 NCAA men’s golf championships.
UCLA Head Coach Derek Freeman enters his seventh season at the helm of the program and has guided the Bruins to one NCAA title (2008) and three NCAA regional championships. In 2013-14, he welcomes the return of 10 lettermen and three players who made at least 10 starts last season.
Veteran returnees who are slated to compete at Erin Hills include: senior Anton Arboleda, fourth-year junior Manav Shah and sophomore Jonathan Garrick, an Honorable Mention GCAA All-American in 2013. Junior Jay Hwang and sophomore Lorens Chan complete the lineup. Sophomore Aaron Kunitomo will compete as an individual.
Arboleda earned Pac-12 Honorable Mention acclaim in 2013, and Shah earned Second-Team All-Pac-12 honors, while leading the team with 12 starts. Chan averaged 72.2 in 27 rounds, and Hwang posted a scoring average of 72.4 in 28 rounds.
Erin Hills GC will play to a par of 72 over 7,234 yards.
