Arizona State’s Tosti, Utah’s Luke named Pac-12 women’s soccer players of the week

Oct 8, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA STATE forward Sarah Tosti was named Offensive Player of the Week and UTAH goalkeeper Lindsey Luke was named Defensive Player of the Week for Pac-12 Women’s Soccer for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

Tosti, a sophomore from Santa Rosa, Calif., earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring the game-winning goal in the Sun Devils’ 1-0 upset win over No. 2 Stanford on the road. ASU snapped the Cardinal’s 44-match Conference unbeaten streak and handed Stanford their first loss at home in 74 matches. The tally came in the 24th minute from 25 yards out and is the first game winner of Tosti’s career. It was the second time in as many weeks that Tosti has been involved in a game-winner, assisting on a game-ending goal on Sept. 29 in the Sun Devil’s Pac-12 opener against USC. After playing defender all of her freshman year, Tosti switched to forward this fall and is third on the team in goals (3) and fourth in points (7).

Luke, a sophomore from Corona Del Mar, Calif., earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording consecutive shutouts in two 1-0 wins against Oregon and Oregon State over the weekend. It was Luke’s seventh shutout of the season, which is one shy of the all-time Ute mark of eight set in 2003. Luke has allowed only one goal in 800 minutes of action this season and leads both the country and the Pac-12 in goals-against-average (.113) and save percentage (.970). The Utes have only lost one game on the year and are unbeaten in Conference play thanks in large part to Luke.

The first-career weekly honor for Tosti is the Sun Devils’ third on the season and 17th overall. This is the second-career weekly honor for Luke and the fourth all-time for Utah.

ASU continues their five-game road trip at Oregon and Oregon State this weekend, taking on the Ducks at 7 p.m. PT on Friday and the Beavers at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday afternoon. Utah is also on the road, traveling to Seattle to face Washington on Friday night at 7 p.m. PT then heading to Pullman to battle Washington State at 11 a.m. PT in a game that will be televised live on the the Pac-12 Networks.
