Women’s Doubles Claim Titles at St. Mary’s

Oct 13, 2013

The duos of Angela Chen/Brianna Kemp and Julija Lukac/Andjela Nemcevic claimed doubles titles over the weekend.

MORAGA, Calif. - In their second tournament of the 2013-14 season, the University of Washington Women’s Tennis team came home with two doubles victories while winning 21 matches overall during the three-day event hosted by St. Mary’s.

Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic claimed the white division title after breezing by Cal Poly’s Bryn Bacharach and Jennifer Cornea 8-4 in the round of 16 before taking down UC-Davis’ Freddie Sleiffer and Tiffany Pham 8-5 in the quarterfinals. Semifinal action saw the Husky duo defeat Anne Susdorf and Anneka Watts of Fresno State 8-3 to lead to a final match with UC-Davis’ Megan Heneghan and Melsa Kobayakawa where Lukak and Nemcevic came out on top with an 8-2 victory.

Joining Lukac and Nemcevic with a doubles title on Sunday was Angela Chen and Brianna Kemp, who had the top seed in the main draw of the blue division and advanced past Kathryn Webb and Mika Padmanaban of Cal Poly in their first match 8-3. They followed up that performance by taking down Kammy Kecki and Samantha Martino (UC-Davis) in the semifinals, 8-4, before defeating Gonzaga’s Isabel Klingert and Katie Edwards, 8-6 for the title.

In the singles matches, Natalie Allen and Angela Chen both advanced to the blue division finals facing each other on Tuesday in Seattle. Allen had a bye in the round of 32 before rallying to defeat Fresno State’s Claire Yang 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. In the quarterfinals she faced Pacific’s Christiana Ferrari and came out victorious 7-5, 6-1. She breezed through the semifinals with a 6-1,6-4 win over San Francisco’s Brooke Irish to set up the final match with her teammate.

Chen’s route to the finals was fairly easy as she defeated Portland’s Marina Remiers (6-1; 6-1), Cal Poly’s Chanel Scudiero (6-2; 6-1) and Cal-Poly’s Sayaka Tsugai (6-2; 6-1) to get to the semifinal match against Gonzaga’s Isabel Klingert. The semifinal match was a battle as Chen claimed the first set 7-6 (5), then lost the second 1-6 before rallying for the win with a 6-2 win in the third.

Up next for the Huskies is the NW Regionals held on the campus of Stanford University, Oct. 18-22.
