Åkesson and Minor's Duck Debut Dominant at Regionals
STANFORD, Calif. – Lina Åkesson and Jasmine Minor of the Oregon women’s tennis team went 3-1 in singles play on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament Friday in Stanford, Calif., at the Taube Tennis Center. Åkesson and Minor both notched their first win as a Duck in the opening round.
With a pair of wins Friday, Åkesson became the first freshman to win her first two matches since fellow teammate Sofia Hager did it in 2011. The Swedish native made quick work of Cal Poly’s Bryn Bacharach winning 6-0, 6-3 in her debut. The freshman was again dominant in her second match as she cruised past Emily McColl of Sacramento State 6-0, 6-1 advancing to the round of 32.
“I was pretty nervous before my first match but after winning, it felt great,” said the freshman. “And of course I’m happy because it was my first collegiate tournament,” Åkesson said.
Deimante Bulatovaite of Sac State battled Minor in her first match but the Georgia Tech transfer was able to grind out a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 victory after three and a half hours. Minor however wasn’t able to keep the momentum going in the second match and fell to Marie Klocker of Sac State 6-2, 6-3 and now plays in the consolation bracket.
“I was a little tired after the first match but it’s just a part of being in a tournament,” said Minor afterwards. “It’s been awhile since I’ve been at a tournament and sometimes you just have to grind out that first round.” When asked about how it affected her in the second match the junior had this to say, “It wore me down for the second [match], but I felt like my playing level was much better in the second match.” “I made a few errors at key times that cost me, but I was much more aggressive and moving in the right direction,” said Minor.
“It was obviously a good day for Lina,” said head coach Paul Reber. “She won her matches handedly but she got a little banged up. We’ll see how she feels after tonight and go from there,” said Reber. “Jasmine did well also, winning her first match against a very talented freshman from Sacramento State.” Reber said of the junior transfer.
“Things look to be lining up in their favor to be able to make a good run down at Stanford,” said Reber.
Åkesson and Minor hope their success in the singles bracket will transfer over to their doubles match when they face Julija Lukak and Andjela Nemcevic of Washington at 9 a.m.
Back in the main singles action, Åkesson is schedule to face Katie Le of Sacramento State at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, Minor will play Claire Jaramishian of UC Davis at 4 p.m. in the singles consolation bracket.
