Men’s Golf to Wrap Up Fall at Wimberly Intercollegiate

Oct 18, 2013

The Arizona men’s golf team will conclude its fall season on Monday and Tuesday when it takes part in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.

New Mexico State will host the 17-team tournament at the New Mexico State University Golf Course, a par-71, 7,074-yard track featuring bent grass greens.

“This is a very important tournament for us in terms of momentum heading into the break,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “We have the opportunity to compete in an environment we’re familiar with, and this is a good field for our team to compete against at this time.

“My goal, like it is for every tournament, is to win. If we can put ourselves in a position to win the tournament with 18 holes to go, it could really springboard us into a productive couple months. That’s what we need heading into the spring.”

Senior Erik Oja, the team leader with a 72.00 stroke average in 11 rounds, will play No. 1 for the Wildcats in their fall finale. The Sandviken, Sweden, native has three top-10 finishes and a top-20 performance in four starts this season, posting five rounds at par or better.

Junior Alex McMahon will play No. 2, followed by freshman Bertrand Mommaerts at No. 3, junior Dylan Kornberg at No. 4 and junior Brenden Redfern at No. 5. Arizona will also take senior Benson Liu to the Wimberly Intercollegiate to play as an individual.

“One of the frustrating parts of the season so far is that we haven’t had the results we’d like, but our attitude and effort have been there,” Anderson said. “We have to do a better job of being prepared, both coaches and players, to play our best golf. We don’t need to play perfect golf; we need every player to play his game and take advantage of opportunities to post good numbers.”

Live scoring will not be available for the Wimberly Intercollegiate, but results will be posted at arizonawildcats.com. For more information on Arizona men’s golf, follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter.
