Pac-12 announces volleyball players of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of October 14-20. ARIZONA’s Madi Kingdon was voted Offensive Player of the Week, while WASHINGTON’s Krista Vansant was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week and Arizona’s Penina Snuka was selected as Freshman Player of the Week.

Junior outside hitter Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the Wildcats’ offensive efforts, recording a .333 hitting percentage as Arizona swept both UCLA and No. 1 USC. It was the first time Arizona has won over UCLA and USC in a single weekend since 2001 when the Wildcats advanced to the Final Four, and it was the first upset over a top-ranked team since Nov. 3, 1993 when the Cats defeated then-No. 1 UCLA. Kingdon paced the Wildcats with double-digit kills in both games, hitting 13 against UCLA and 20 against USC. The junior also added 15 digs and three service aces. Arizona broke into the top-25 this week after the upset, ranking at No. 25 in the AVCA weekly poll.

Junior outside hitter Krista Vansant (Redlands, Calif.) had a career weekend, passing the 1,000 career kills mark after posting 37 kills on the weekend as the Huskies earned victories over California and No. 7 Stanford. Vansant also recorded double-digit digs in each match, with 14 against Cal and a career-high 20 against Stanford. She became the first Husky to record at least 20 digs and 20 kills in a match since Kindra Carlson in 2009.

Setter Penina Snuka (Gilbert, Ariz.) turned in her best performance so far this season for Arizona in the sweeps of UCLA and No. 1 USC. Snuka recorded double-doubles in both matches, bringing her total number of double-double matches to 10 on the year, the most of anyone in the Conference. She posted 73 total assists on the weekend, along with 20 digs and three service aces. Her 43 assists against UCLA tied the Pac-12 record for most assists in a three-set match.

It is Kingdon's second-career weekly honor, with her first coming earlier this season on Sept. 23. The award also brings Arizona’s all-time total to 31. Vansant earns her second weekly award this season and fourth of her career, but this week marks her first-career Defensive Player of the Week nod. Snuka garners the weekly award for the second time this season and it is the Wildcats’ fourth all-time.

Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women’s volleyball in 1986. It is the third year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.

The Wildcats and the Huskies hit the road this weekend as the halfway point of the Conference schedule approaches. No. 3 Washington takes on UCLA and No. 4 USC, while No. 25 Arizona travels to face Colorado and Utah.
