BERKELEY - The California rugby fall 7s season resumes Saturday, Oct. 26, when the Golden Bears (3-1) send a squad replete with youth and short on experience into the Saint Mary’s Sevens Invitational Tournament, held at the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club on Treasure Island. Cal enters as the top seed in Pool A against Sacramento State at 9:50 a.m., San Diego State at 11:45 a.m. and Chico State at 1:40 p.m.
With the PAC Rugby 7s Tournament and a conference title on the line the following weekend, Nov. 2-3, in Los Angeles, the Rugby Bears will rest several players and offer playing time deeper down the depth chart in a tourney format that allows for unlimited rosters.
“The tournament using unlimited rosters is a good approach,” said head coach Jack Clark. “It will allow us to share playing time with players who otherwise wouldn’t get on.”
In Sac State the Bears have the same opponent they beat, 33-7, Oct. 12 at the West Coast 7s, where the blue and gold followed that win with two more over UC Davis and Saint Mary’s before dropping a five-point decision to UCLA in the final.
After playing the Hornets, Cal faces the Aztecs and Chico State looking to set up their second day. Sunday’s knockout play, seeded based on Saturday’s results, will send Cal against an opponent to be determined from Pool D, comprised of Central Washington, Arizona State, Stanford and Santa Rosa Junior College.
The semifinals for the championship cup as well as the consolation bowl and shield brackets will be set after Sunday’s first match, with the cup final slated to kick off at 2:35 p.m.
Other teams at the Saint Mary’s 7s this weekend include the host Gales as Pool B favorites followed by Western Washington, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis in that group. Pool C features UCLA, Cal Poly, Santa Clara University and the University of San Diego.
