STANFORD, Calif. Seshia Telles shot a 2-over 73 in the opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday, but the Beavers were unable to get another solid score from their other players and sit in a tie for 15th place at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.

The Beavers concluded first round action with a 20-over 304 at the par-71, 6,130-yard Stanford Golf Course and are tied with Georgia for 15th in a field that features 10 teams ranked in the top 25, including five of the nation’s top 10.

T68 Anica Yoo (1) 77 77
T68 Ashlee Pickerell (4) 77 77
T68 Lauren Sewell (5) 77 77
T80 Chelsea Saelee (2) 80 80

Telles carded birdies on the par-5 seventh, par-4 10th and par-4 15th holes, and had five bogeys, for her 2-over 73. Senior Lauren Sewell, junior Anica Yoo and sophomore Ashlee Pickerell each shot a 6-over 77 to make up the Beavers’ first round scoring. Sophomore Chelsea Saelee had two birdies, the second most on the team, but took a triple bogey, a double bogey and six bogeys for a 9-over 80.

“Obviously, today was not the way we wanted to start,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “But I was very proud of the team because they started poorly and were able to fight back and finish strong. Seshia was probably the most consistent player of the day and the others fought hard to mange some difficult situations. I fully expect them to play well the next two rounds, and they have a mindset and the game that can do that.”

No. 2 USC leads the tournament through 18 holes after firing an 8-under 276, while Washington is second with a 2-under 282, and Stanford and Oregon are tied for third with a 1-under 283. Sophia Popov of USC holds a two-stroke lead for the individual title after finishing with a 5-under 66.

The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with tee times off the first and 10th holes.
