Pac-12 announces women's soccer players of the week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD forward Chioma Ubogagu was named Offensive Player of the Week and UTAH goalkeeper Lindsey Luke was named Defensive Player of the Week for Pac-12 Women’s Soccer for the week of Oct. 21-27, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Ubogagu, a junior from Coppell, Texas, earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after collecting one goal and two assists as Stanford swept Oregon and Oregon State over the weekend. On Friday, she assisted on the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of a 2-1 victory in Eugene then followed on Sunday with a goal and assist in a 4-1 decision over the Beavers in Corvallis. The two wins launched the No. 7-ranked Cardinal to second-place in Conference standings and extended their winning streak to three heading into the final three games of the season.
Luke, a sophomore from Del Mar, Calif., was named Defensive Player of the Week after recording 14 saves and one shutout in a 1-1 tie with No. 2 UCLA and a 1-0 win over USC at home. Eight of her saves came against Conference-leader UCLA as the Utes went unbeaten on the weekend to take sole possession of third place. The shutout was Luke’s eighth on the season, matching a single-season school shutout mark set in 2003. She ranks 14th in the nation in goals against average (0.49) and fourth in save percentage (.909) while leading the Pac-12 in saves (70) and saves per game (5.4).
This is the first-career weekly honor for Ubogagu and the 39th overall for Stanford, the most in Conference history. Luke’s second weekly-honor on the year is her third overall. She now owns three of the five all-time weekly honors for Utah and is the 15th player in Pac-12 history to earn the honor more than twice.
Stanford and Utah will both be on the road this weekend for the last full weekend of Pac-12 play. The Cardinal take on Washington at 7 p.m. PT on Thursday night in a Halloween showdown then head to Pullman to face Washington State in a 11 a.m. PT Sunday morning match. The Utes head to Tucson on Friday for a 3 p.m. PT game against the Wildcats followed by a Sunday 11 a.m. PT face-off at Arizona State. All four games will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
