LOS ANGELES - California scored 28 tries and surrendered only three over four matches, sweeping Pool A Saturday at UCLA to advance to Sunday’s cup semifinals at the PAC Sevens Tournament.

The Golden Bears (12-2) face Oregon State at 11 a.m. Sunday on North Athletic Field, while the Bruins and Arizona State square off in the other semifinal at 10:40 a.m. The two semi winners will then play at 1 p.m. for the conference 7s crown.

Cal opened its PAC Sevens account Saturday morning with a 10-try, 66-0 win over USC. Lucas Dunne, Nicklas Boyer and Jared Braun each scored a pair of tries against the Trojans.

Next up against the Huskies, Jesse Milne recorded two tries and the Cal defense held UW scoreless as the Bears defeated Washington, 33-0.

Against Colorado, Cal played solid cover defense over the opening two minutes before Harry Adolphus scored the first of his two tries. The Bears notched six tries and remained staunch before yielding the first score of the day by the opposition when CU’s Jack Porter dotted down at the end of the match for a 38-5 final score.

In its pool-play finale vs. the Sun Devils, Josh Tucker chased down and collected his own kick, then offloaded to Alec Gletzer in the second minute for the game’s first try. The Bears scored six tries in all against ASU, including a second by Gletzer, which offset two tries by the Devils’ Ryan Koewler in a 32-12 victory.

“We wanted to push it hard, close out games and keep going through the fatigue,” said Brad Harrington, who scored a try and intercepted an ASU pass to set up Cal’s final try of the day by Eakalafi Okusi. Harrington added the punctuating conversion.

“We played hard and put in a good effort,” added Boyer, who also scored a try against the Buffaloes. “We still need to improve to advance past the semifinal but overall it was a good day.”
