Pac-12 announces volleyball players of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of October 28-Nov. 3. USC’s Samantha Bricio was named the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, while her teammate, senior Natalie Hagglund, was voted the Defensive Player of the Week. WASHINGTON STATE’s Kyra Holt was also tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Week.

Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Bricio (Guadalajara, Mexico) had a well-rounded weekend, helping the Trojans record a pair of wins in the Bay Area over No. 6 Stanford (3-2) and No. 22 California (3-1). Bricio contributed all over the box score, serving up five aces en route to recording the team’s single-season mark in the category (61). Bricio added career highs for solo blocks (4), block assists (4) and total blocks (8). She scored 25.0 points (14 kills) to lead the Trojans to victory and posted her fifth-straight double-double and seventh of the season. Bricio was also a force on the defensive end as she posted a career-best 23 digs to help the Trojans knock off the Cardinal on the road. On the weekend, she averaged 4.78 points, 4.00 digs and 0.78 service aces per set.

Senior All-American libero Natalie Hagglund (Encinitas, Calif.) became the program’s all-time career leader in digs over the weekend as she logged a pair of 36-dig matches. The marks rank among the top-10 single-match performances in USC history, and was the second time in her career that she posted back-to-back 30-dig matches. Hagglund averaged an 8.00 digs per set in two big road wins over Stanford and Cal. She also moved into fifth all-time in Pac-12 history in career digs (2,131). Against Stanford, 16 of Hagglund’s digs led straight to kills (.444) and while she was rarely served to, three of her seven passes led to kills (.429). Against the Bears, 12 of Hagglund’s touches produced kills for the Trojans.

Freshman outside hitter Kyra Holt (Hercules, Calif.) tallied a match-high 20 kills with eight digs and four blocks in the Cougars 3-0 win over Utah on Saturday in Pullman. She also had a match-high 19 kills with nine digs, three blocks and two aces in WSU’s five-set loss to Colorado on Friday night. Holt leads the team offensively with averages of 3.97 kills and 4.67 points per set, both which are seventh-best in the Pac-12. Her team-best 0.34 service aces per set is fifth-best in the Conference. Holt has recorded double-digit kills in 23 of the 24 Cougars’ matches this season and has had 10 double-doubles, which is tied for fourth in the league.

It is Bricio’s second-career offensive weekly honor and Hagglund’s fifth of her career. It is USC’s 56th and 57th all-time recognition. Holt was named the freshman of the week on Sept. 9, becoming the first Cougar to earn the honor, all-time.

Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women’s volleyball in 1986. It is the third year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.

Washington State will be on the Pac-12 Networks twice this week when it travels for matches at Arizona State on Wednesday, Nov. 6 and Arizona on Sunday, Nov. 10. The Trojans remain at home to host Oregon and Oregon State on Friday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 10, respectively.
