Bears’ Johnson Beats Lion at National Indoors

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – California’s Campbell Johnson began the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on a high note as the Golden Bear won his opening main draw singles match on Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center. The Golden Bear senior beat Max Schnur of host Columbia, 6-1, 7-6(2), in the round of 32.

Johnson plays Illinois’ eighth-seeded Jared Hiltzik in Friday’s round of 16.

In the doubles main draw round of 16 on Thursday, the Cal team of juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton lost to Illinois’ fourth-seeded and 10th-ranked team of Ross Guignon and Tim Kopinski, 8-5. The Bears next play in the doubles consolation draw.

The tournament concludes on Sunday.
