Cross Country’s Houlihan Punches Ticket To NCAAs
SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Arizona State cross country’s junior Shelby Houlihan punched her ticket to next week’s 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terra Haute, Ind., as she finished second at the NCAA West Regional meet at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
Houlihan, who received All-Region honors for her performance, finished at a career-best time of 19:14, besting her previous career best in the 6k, set at the Wisconsin Invite (Oct. 19) at 19:52. The placement also marks a career best for Houlihan who finished at 4th a season ago, and 12th her freshman year.
Freshman Bernie Montoya also picked up All-Region honors for his 20th place finish in the men’s 10k at 30:13, leading ASU to a fifth-place team finish.
The ASU men’s team finished with 184 points, three ahead of Pac-12 Conference foe UCLA.
Redshirt senior Garrett Seawell finished with 28 points (29th overall) for the Sun Devils at 30:31, while fellow redshirt senior Steven Schnieders finished with 38 points (39th overall). Rounding out the point scorers for the Maroon and Gold were redshirt junior Garrett Baker-Slama at 40th (39 points), and redshirt sophomore Jeff Bickert at 61st (60 points).
The ASU men will learn if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship meet on Saturday.
On the women’s side, freshman Chiara Warner finished 32nd as she shattered her career best with a time of 20:24, followed closely by sophomore Adriana Olivas at 20:31 for 37th place. Rounding out the women’s team scorers were freshman Kala Stone at a career best 20:39 (44th) and junior Shaina Corbin at 20:51, also a career best.
The Stanford men’s team picked up the team crown as it placed three of its runners in the top-6 for 53 points, while Pac-12 men’s individual champion Edward Cheserek from Oregon won the West Region title with a time of 29:29.
On the women’s side, Arizona picked up the team win with 84 points, while Boise State’s Emma Bates edged Houlihan for the title with a final time of 19:11.
The 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23.
