CORVALLIS, Ore. – Becky Defoe picked up 20 digs in her final career match in the Oregon State volleyball team’s three-set loss to No. 6 Stanford Saturday night at Gill Coliseum.
Set scorers were 22-25, 23-25 and 20-25.
“That’s a very good Stanford team’ Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. “They’re No. 6 for a reason. But we blocked them well and fought very hard. The whole match was dependent on them having nine services aces and we had three. That was the match in a nutshell.”
Defoe recorded 10 of her 20 digs in the third and final set of the match. The 20 pushes her to 449 for the season, which is good for sixth-most in a season at OSU.
“Becky was unbelievable in the third set,” Liskevych said. “The digs she made in that third set were unbelievable.”
The 20 digs came on the team’s annual Senior Night. Defoe, the team’s lone senior student-athlete this season, also has 1,967 digs for her career, and is aiming to become the 10th player in Pac-12 Conference history to reach 2,000.
To do so, she’ll need to average 8.3 digs per match over the team’s last four contests this season.
The Beavers hit .198 for the match, and held Stanford to a .211 clip. The teams combined for 103 digs and 11 blocks. Stanford was decisive in service aces, recording nine to the Beavers’ three.
Lila Toner and Amanda Brown tied for the Oregon State team lead with 10 kills apiece, while Tayla Woods pitched in with her ninth double double of the year. The redshirt junior recorded 33 assists and 11 digs.
Stanford’s Carly Wopat led the Cardinal with 13 kills. Kyle Gilbert was tops on the club with 15 digs.
The Beavers out-hit the Cardinal, .225 to .171 in the first set, and saw eight tie scores and two lead changes. Stanford, however, took the frame, 25-22.
Oregon State hit .216 in the second set but the Cardinal managed to post a .297 percentage. Set three was similar, with both teams under .200 – Oregon State was at .159 and Stanford at .167. The Beavers managed a 6-0 run early in the set to go ahead 10-9 but could not stave off Stanford’s attack in a set that saw nine ties and four lead changes.
Overall, the teams traded leads eight times with 21 tie scores.
The match concluded Oregon State’s home slate for the 2013 season. The Beavers finish the year with four consecutive road matches, beginning with a 4 p.m. PT start at Colorado on Friday. The match will air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
