No. 3 UCLA Wins 10-8 at No. 7 Pepperdine
MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team posted a 10-8 win at No. 7 Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins improved to 25-2 overall and 5-1 in the MPSF (tied for first) while the Waves dropped to 9-12 overall and 1-6 in the league.
Senior Lucas Reynolds, junior Paul Reynolds and sophomore Danny McClintick each scored two goals for UCLA. Danny White had five goals to lead pepperdine.
The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a power play goal from Paul Reynolds (6:04) and a goal from two meters by Lucas Reynolds (5:05). After a power play goal by Pepperdine's Marko Madaras (2:58), Paul Reynolds scored his second goal at the 1:51 mark of the first period to put UCLA up 3-1. Sophomore Anthony Daboub then scored on a counter attack (:55) to make it 4-1. White then scored his first goal of the game from the front court (:34) to end the scoring at 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Senior Aimone Barabino extended the lead to 5-2 with a power play goal to open the scoring in the second period (5:30). White scored his second goal of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity (2:32) to trim the lead to 5-3. But McClintick scored his first goal of the game (:21) after a foul at five meters. White completed his hat trick with another goal from the front court (:10) to cut the Bruins' lead to 6-4 at the half.
Lucas Reynolds scored his second of the game from set to extend the lead to 7-4 at the 5:50 mark of the third period. Madaras scored his second goal of the game on a power play (5:15). The Bruins again pushed the lead to three (8-5) with a goal from the front court (4:52) by McClintick, his second of the game. Pepperdine closed the gap to 8-7 at the end of three with back-to-back goals from White (4:11) and Chad Farman (3:34).
The Bruins put the game away with two power play goals in the fourth quarter by UCLA freshmen. Gordon Marshall scored the eventual game-winner to put the Bruins up 9-7 (6:21). White scored his fifth of the game on a penalty shot (2:47) to pull the Waves to within one (9-8). Ryder Roberts also picked up an exclusion goal with :49 remaining to provide the 10-8 final score.
Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner made the start in the cage for UCLA and played the entire contest, registering 13 saves. Bence Valics was credited with 14 stops in the cage for Pepperdine.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they host UC Santa Barbara at 11:00 a.m. on "Senior Day" on the Pac-12 Networks.
