Cal’s Season Ends with 2-1 Loss to Santa Clara in NCAA First Round

The Cal women’s soccer team — 0-3 during the regular season when its opponent scored in the first half — was in trouble after giving up an early goal to Santa Clara Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. And the postseason is not an easy place to buck trends. The Bears (11-5-5, 4-4-3 in the Pac-12) evened the score in the second half, but the the Bronco tacked on another goal to emerge victorious, 2-1, at their home field in Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara.

CU Soccer Upsets No. 15 Denver In NCAA First Round

It looked to be a mismatch when Colorado took the field with No. 15 Denver in the first round of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament on Saturday. That didn’t matter to Anne Stuller, who scored the game’s only goal in the 83rd minute to give the Buffs the 1-0 upset. Colorado (13-6-2, 4-5-2), which dealt the Pioneers only their second loss of the season, moves on to challenge BYU in Tallahassee, Fla., next Friday.

Cougars Eliminated in NCAA First Round

Being close did not cut it for the No. 21 Washington State women’s soccer team on Saturday. The Cougars played Illinois to a tie through two overtimes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, only to fall, 3-1, in penalty kicks at Lower Soccer Field. It marked the second-straight year that Washington State (14-3-4) lost in the tournament’s first round in penalty kicks.
