Pac-12 announces men’s soccer all-conference honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a vote by the Conference coaches, UCLA junior midfielder Leo Stolz was named Pac-12 Player of the Year, WASHINGTON freshman midfielder Cristian Roldan was voted Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, and Washington head coach Jamie Clark was selected as Pac-12 Coach of the Year, the Conference announced the today. The 2013 Men’s Soccer All-Pac-12 teams were also announced.
Pac-12 Player of the Year – Leo Stolz, UCLA
The Munich, Germany, native is the sixth-overall and third-consecutive UCLA player to be tabbed as Player of the Year for Pac-12 men’s soccer. Stolz finished the regular season leading the Conference in points (23), tallying nine goals and five assists in 18 games played for the Bruins. He is a three-time member of the College Soccer News National Team of the Week this season and earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors twice. The junior midfielder was also a first-team All-Pac-12 selection last year as a sophomore.
Pac-12 Freshman of the Year – Cristian Roldan, Washington
Roldan finished his freshman campaign tied for first on the Husky roster in points (16) and goals (6), and was third in the Conference in total shots (51). A native of Pico Rivera, Calif., Roldan was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Oct. 22, and received TopSoccerDrawer.com National Player of the Week and College Soccer News National Team of the Week honors, as well.
Pac-12 Coach of the Year – Jamie Clark, Washington
Clark earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year after leading Washington to its first Pac-12 regular-season title since 2000 and the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies burst onto the scene at the beginning of the year, entering the 2013 season ranked 23rd in the NSCAA preseason poll. UW remained unbeaten through non-conference play and has suffered only one loss on the season to then-No. 4 UCLA. Under Clark’s direction, the Huskies have stayed in the top five in the NSCAA weekly rankings for eight-straight weeks, including a four-week stand at No. 3 overall. It is Washington’s second Coach of the Year honor after Dean Wurzberger earned a share of the accolade in 2004.
