Stanford’s Kovar named men’s soccer Player of the Week

Nov 19, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD sophomore midfielder Aaron Kovar was voted the Pac-12 men’s soccer Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 11-17, the Conference office announced today.

Kovar was paramount to Stanford’s 2-1 overtime win against No. 5 California, assisting on the first goal and then scoring the golden goal in the 92nd minute. The Seattle, Wash., native latched onto a loose ball and dribbled through four Cal defenders into the box and finished with a right-footed volley to give the Cardinal a signature win and seal its case for an NCAA Tournament berth. The sophomore rounded out the regular season with nine points, tallying two goals and five assists with 33 total shots on the year.

The honor is Kovar’s first-career weekly award. It marks the 18th overall weekly accolade for Stanford, as well as the third for the Cardinal this season.

Stanford finished the regular season with a 9-6-3 overall record and a 3-5-2 slate in Pac-12 play. The Cardinal kicks off NCAA Tournament action with a first-round game against Loyola Marymount, hosting the Lions on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. PT.
