ASU, Texas A&M To Play In 2015 Advocare Texas Kickoff In Houston's Reliant Stadium
TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State University and Texas A&M University have completed an agreement for a football game to be played in Houston, Texas on Saturday, September 5, 2015, Steve Patterson announced Friday. The game is the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff.
The game will be played at Reliant Stadium in Houston, which boasts a capacity of 71,500. Reliant Stadium opened on September 8, 2002 and is the home of the Houston Texans. The facility hosted Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 and the NCAA Final Four in 2011 and is scheduled to play host again in 2016. More than 50-percent of the building is glass.
The contract calls for a one-game, neutral site game contracted between ASU and Texas A&M through ESPN Regional Television.
“We are excited to participate in this unique college football event in the state of Texas against an SEC opponent in Texas A&M,” says Patterson. “Our fans and alumni experienced a fabulous time in Dallas with the Notre Dame game at AT&T Stadium earlier this year and we are excited to provide another similar opportunity for our fans, alumni and student-athletes. Todd Graham and his coaching staff recruit the state of Texas and this can only serve to enhance that effort.”
ASU has made scheduling in the state of Texas a priority of late, and has a previously-announced future football series with the University of Texas-San Antonio, which begins at UTSA on Saturday, September 17, 2016 and returns to Tempe on Saturday, September 1, 2018.
ESPN Regional Television will manage and market the game. ASU will receive an allotment of tickets for the game. ESPN will have the live television rights to the game.
“The AdvoCare Texas Kickoff continues to develop into one of the finest labor day weekend events in the country,” said Pete Derzis, ESPN Sr. Vice President and General Manager of ESPN Regional Television. “These two outstanding programs will treat the college football fans in Houston to an exciting launch of the 2015 season.”
“We are very excited to host two of America’s elite collegiate football programs and look forward to experiencing the atmosphere their passionate fans will create at Reliant Stadium,” said Jamey Rootes, Houston Texans President. “Our goal in establishing the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff was to position Houston and Reliant Stadium as a premier destination for college football. Having these two outstanding institutions in our 2015 game helps to enhance the credibility of that positioning significantly.”
This will be the first meeting in football between ASU and Texas A&M.
