Nov 24, 2013

Fourth-Seeded Cal Advances, Beats Bradley 3-1

The California men’s soccer team returned to form just when it needed to. After ending the regular season losing four of their last six, including the last two, the fourth-seeded Golden Bears took care of business Sunday against Bradley, winning 3-1 in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Alec Sundly scored two goals for Cal (13-4-2), which will return to action next Sunday in the postseason’s third round.

Taylor Nods Cardinal Forward

All the Stanford men’s soccer team needed on Sunday to advance to the third round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament was a heavy dose of defense — and Matt Taylor’s head. Taylor’s header in the 21st minute was all the Cardinal would need, as the squad put forth a dominating defensive performance to topple Cal State Northridge, 1-0, on the road. Stanford (10-6-4) will face Pac-12 foe Washington next Sunday.

Top-Seeded UCLA Cruises to 4-0 Victory over Elon in NCAA 2nd Round

Leo Stolz validated his Pac-12 Player of the Year award Sunday, assisting on three goals as the UCLA men’s soccer team took care of Elon easily with a 4-0 win at Drake Stadium. Victor Chavez scored two goals for the Bruins (12-3-4), who advance to the third round of the NCAA tournament to face Connecticut.

Dawgs Advance, Top Seattle U., 4-2

The Washington Huskies looked like the Pac-12 champions Sunday, dominating Seattle University, 4-2, in NCAA men’s soccer tournament. The Huskies (15-1-4), who scored the first four goals of the game to give themselves a sizable cushion, will look to jump on the scoreboard first next week when they face Stanford in their second-ever Sweet 16 appearance._
