Pac-12 announces volleyball players of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of Nov. 18-24. STANFORD’s Rachel Williams was voted Offensive Player of the Week, while OREGON’s Arianna Williams was named Defensive Player of the Week. WASHINGTON STATE’s Kyra Holt was selected Freshman of the Week for the second-consecutive week and fourth time this season.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Williams (Los Gatos, Calif.) led Stanford offensively as the Cardinal earned sweeps over No. 3 Washington and Washington State last week, pacing the team with 3.67 kills, 4.58 points and 3.33 digs per set in the two matches. Williams entered the week hitting .219, but recorded a .475 attack percentage in the matches against the Washington schools. She led all Stanford players with 11 kills on a .529 hitting percentage to go with nine digs, four blocks and two aces as the Cardinal handed the third-ranked Huskies their first 3-0 loss of the season. Against WSU, Williams finished with her team-best ninth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 11 digs as she hit .435 to help head coach John Dunning become just the fourth active NCAA Division I head coach to reach the 800-win plateau. Stanford is currently on a seven-match winning streak and has posted 3-0 sweeps in 18 of its 22 wins on the season.

Senior middle blocker Arianna Williams (Riverside, Calif.) recorded 16 blocks and six digs over the course of Oregon’s two road wins over Utah and Colorado. The trip was highlighted by an 11-block performance at Utah on Friday, which was the most blocks by a Duck since Oct. 31, 2008. The match was Williams’ second time reaching double digits in blocks this season and the first time a Duck has done it twice since at least 2006. She added 13 kills on 24 attempts in the 3-1 victory over the Utes for a .292 attack percentage. Against Colorado, Williams recorded five blocks and nine kills to give the Ducks a 3-1 victory over the Buffs. The senior averaged 4.19 points per set over the course of the weekend as well as 2.00 blocks per set.

Outside hitter Kyra Holt (Hercules, Calif.) recorded 41 kills on a total of 115 attempts with merely eight errors as the Cougars split the weekend against Stanford and California. The freshman had a career-high 28 kills in WSU’s 3-2 come-from-behind win at No. 23 California, leading the Cougars in the final three sets with 18 kills and only one error in 44 attacks, while adding six digs for a total of 11 over the five sets. Against then-No. 5 Stanford, Holt led Washington State with 13 kills, six digs, two blocks and two service aces. She leads the Cougars offensively with a 3.94 kills per set average and a 4.59 points per set average.

It is Stanford’s 87th overall weekly award and Rachel Williams’ second-career honor, her first coming on Sept. 12, 2011 as a sophomore. The defensive accolade is Arianna Williams’ first-career weekly award and Oregon’s 27th overall weekly honor. Holt has now earned Freshman of the Week honors for two-consecutive weeks and four times throughout the season. All four of Washington State’s weekly freshman honors have come this season.

Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women’s volleyball in 1986. It is the third year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.

All three teams wrap up their regular season this week. Stanford travels to take on Arizona before returning to its home court to face Bay Area rival California. Oregon and Washington State face off in Pullman before the Ducks host Oregon State and the Cougars hit the road to face Washington.
