Gold Grabs Another Win In Intrasquad Meet

SEATTLE - For the fourth time in the five years of the Husky Intrasquad Meet, the Gold team edged out Team Purple inside the Dempsey on Thursday night. With temperatures hovering around freezing outdoors, the Husky track and field team warmed up the track, with a number of impressive efforts providing a glimpse of the indoor season to come.

For the third year in a row Team Gold maintained bragging rights, scoring 244 points to the 226 of Team Purple. Events on the agenda included an 88-meter dash, the length of the full Dempsey straightaway, a 300-meter sprint, 1200-meter run, 60-meter hurdles, all four jumping events, shot put, weight throw, and a special medicine ball toss for the sprinters. The night concluded with the traditional full-team relay, with each team member running one lap of the 307-meter oval.

Out of the many strong performances, sophomore Jax Thoirs provided possibly the highlight, as he cleared 18-1 3/4 to win the pole vault, which would be a PR though all marks at the Intrasquad are unofficial. Thoirs officially broke the 18-foot mark in a meet in Europe over the summer.

Five Huskies won multiple events. Jack Scheideman won both men's throws, Kasen Covington won the long and triple jumps, and Kayla Stueckle won the women's 300-meters and the medicine ball toss all for Team Purple. But Quadelle Satterwhite won both men's sprints, and Jaleecia Roland took the women's high jump and triple jump for Gold.

Another great performance came from Eleanor Fulton, who won the 1,200-meter run by ten seconds, posting a time of 3:26.32. Kimmie Stueckle and Naivasha Sophusson Smith had a good battle in the 60m hurdles, both running for Gold, with Stueckle getting the win, 8.65 to 8.71, and Haley Jacobson had another win for Gold, taking the 88-meters in 10.92.

Logan Miller won the women's vault at 12-11 1/2, and newcomer Diamara Planell Cruz was second at 12-5 1/2. Freshman Gina Flint won the shot, going 45-3 1/2, and Bev Coleman won the weight for a second year in a row, throwing 50-1 3/4, four feet farther than last season.

Men's winners also featured 2013 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Chris Williams, who cleared the hurdles in 7.94 seconds. Derrick Daigre ran the 1,200-meters in 3:04.13 for the win. Sophomore sprinter Travis Marshall heaved the medicine ball 99-feet, eight feet past the next-best mark, to win that for Gold.

Team Gold had the win locked up heading into the final relay, but Team Purple got the last celebration, as they won the massive relay by ten seconds. Purple got an impressive early carry from javelin thrower Quinn Hale to take the lead, and wrapped up the win in 17-minutes, 51-seconds.

The Huskies will put aside their Intrasquad grudges and compete for the first time on January 18, as UW hosts the Indoor Preview to begin the 2014 season.
