Football’s Sutton, Pair Of Freshmen Earn All-America Honors
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State University senior defensive tackle Will Sutton has earned USA Today First Team All-America honors, and freshman kicker Zane Gonzalez and redshirt freshman linebacker Salamo Fiso have been named College Football News Freshman All-Americans.
The Sun Devils have now had four freshman All-Americans in head coach Todd Graham’s two seasons at ASU after running back DJ Foster and defensive tackle Jaxon Hood both earned 2012 honors.
Sutton, one of five Pac-12 players on the first team, is only the second player in conference history to be named two-time Pac-12 Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year. He recorded 44 tackles, including 11.5 tackles for loss and four sacks, and added an interception, a fumble recovery and four passes defensed.
He registered a career-high nine tackles in a Nov. 9 win over Utah, and his first career interception with just over a minute to play sealed the key conference road victory. He also collected three tackles for loss and a sack in a win over then-No. 20 Washington on Oct. 19, and added a pair of tackles for loss and a sack in the Devils’ win over USC on Sept. 28.
Sutton has notched 157 tackles in 50 career games at ASU, and his 20.5 career sacks and 43.5 career tackles for loss rank seventh and ninth, respectively, in school history.
Gonzalez, who earned College Football News Second Team All-America honors, was twice named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week this season and earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors.
He accounted for 127 points to set a single-season school record for kickers and made a school-record 18 consecutive field goals between Sept. 28 against USC and Nov. 30 against Arizona.
Gonzalez was responsible for 16 points in the win over the Wildcats as he connected on all 10 of his kicks, including all three field goals and all seven extra points, and made all four of his field goals against the Huskies. He was 22-for-26 on field goals this season, including a long of 41, and made 61 extra points.
Fiso, a College Football News Honorable Mention All-American, ranked third on the team in total tackles with 62, including 45 solo, and added 5.5 tackles for loss, including three sacks for 26 yards.
He made his first two career sacks against the Huskies on Oc. 19, set a career high with eight tackles in a win over Oregon State on Nov. 16, and added seven tackles against both Notre Dame on Oct. 5 and Arizona on Nov. 30.
