LA QUINTA, Calif. – Former Cal men’s golfer Max Homa and current junior Michael Kim continued their strong play Saturday in the third round of the final stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament and are tied for fourth place halfway through the six-round event. Kim (68-69-66 – 203, -13) moved up 10 spots after firing a six-under-par 66 to tie for the fourth-best round of the day, while Homa (72-64-67 – 203, -13) rose three positions with his five-under par 67. Both played at the PGA West Stadium Course.
Steve Saunders (67-65-67 – 199, -17) is the third-round leader four strokes ahead of Homa and Kim.
Kim bogeyed the par-four first hole after ending his Friday round with a double bogey on the par-four 18th but then made birdies on six of the next eight holes to finish with a five-under 31 on the front nine. He had birdies on the par-three fourth hole, the par-four second and seventh holes, and the par-five fifth and eighth. Kim made his seventh and final birdie of the round on the par-five 16th.
“I’m trying to take it round-by-round,” Kim told PGATOUR.com. “I still have three more rounds to go. That’s a lot of golf left. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
Homa had five birdies during his bogey-free round, picking up strokes on the par-three sixth and 13th holes, the par-four ninth and 12th, and the par-five eighth.
The winner and ties from the event’s 152-player field receive exemptions to play on the 2014 Web.com Tour. Players finishing after the winner through 10th place including ties are exempt until the third periodic re-order of the tour’s 2014 season, while players finishing after 10th place through 45th including ties are exempt until the second periodic re-order of the 2014 campaign.
Homa turned professional earlier this year following the end of his collegiate career at Cal, while Kim is one of three amateurs playing in the event.
The fourth round of the tournament is scheduled to be played Sunday with Homa and Kim in the same threesome along with Nathan Tyler slated to tee off from the first hole of the Nicklaus Course at 10:20 a.m. PT. All players in the field are scheduled to play a single round each day through the end of the event next Tuesday.
