Moos’ Career-High 19 Points Leads Sun Devil WBB to Eighth Straight Win
FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman Kelsey Moos scored 15 of her career-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Arizona State women’s basketball team to an 81-55 win over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
The Sun Devils (9-1) shot 50 percent, including 58 percent (11-19) from 3-point range, while limiting the Titans (1-8) to only 34 percent to win their eighth straight game.
Also scoring in double figures for ASU were freshman Sophie Brunner (13 points), redshirt sophomore Katie Hempen (11 points) and sophomore Elisha Davis (10 points).
A 3-pointer by Hempen and a layup from Brunner gave the Sun Devils their first double-digit lead of the game, 20-10, with 10:11 left in the first half. ASU would lead by as many as 13 in the first half before heading to the locker room with a 33-22 halftime lead. The Sun Devils did not allow the Titans to score over the last three-plus minutes of the half.
Brunner and Hempen scored nine points each to tie for the team lead during the first 20 minutes. All nine of Hempen’s points came from behind the arc as she accounted for half of ASU’s six triples (6-10) in the first half.
Moos scored ASU’s first five points of the second half to help set the tone for the Sun Devils, who would extend their lead to 20 midway through the final frame. Moos (6-8), Brunner (2-2) and sophomore Arnecia Hawkins (2-2) combined to shoot 83 percent (10-12) in the second half as the Sun Devils shot 59 percent as a team.
ASU was just as dominating on the defensive end as it allowed the Titans to shoot only 27 percent in the second half. The majority of CSFU’s 33 second-half points came from the foul line where it connected on 19-of-24 attempts.
The Sun Devils return to action next Saturday (Dec. 21) when they host Miami at 12:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. Saturday’s game against Miami will be Native American Day. The Sun Devil women’s basketball program will be honoring the jersey of former Sun Devil Ryneldi Becenti. Becenti’s No. 21 will be the first women’s basketball jersey to be hung from the rafters of Wells Fargo Arena. Also being recognized during the halftime ceremony will be former Sun Devil Native American players Rainy Crisp and Michelle Tom.
