Sun Devils Jump On Colorado Early, Often In Big Home Win
Arizona State 54, Colorado 13
Oct. 12, 2013, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
Sun Devil quarterback Taylor Kelly accounted for three touchdowns and running back Marion Grice rushed for two more in a dominating first half, leading Arizona State to a 54-13 rout over Colorado on Saturday night.
The offense set the tone on their first drive of the game as Kelly threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaelen Strong on just the fifth play of the game. Grice scored on an 8-yard run three minutes later, kicker Zane Gonzalez knocked in a 26-yard field goal and Grice scored again on a 1-yard run after a Colorado interception to overwhelm the Buffaloes with 25 points in the game’s first 11 minutes.
That made it 25-0 after one quarter for Arizona State, which scored 24 points in the opening quarter its first five games combined. It was the Sun Devils’ most first-quarter points since 2002, when they had 28 in a rout of Stanford.
Kelly threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score, and Grice pushed his nation-leading touchdown total to 15 as the Sun Devils went up 47-6 at halftime.
The Devils scored six touchdowns and kicked three field goals en route to amassing 532 yards, including 276 yards on the ground and 256 yards through the air.
The defense held Colorado to 268 total yards and forced four turnovers as defensive backs Lloyd Carrington, Robert Nelson and Damarious Randall each notched an interception, and freshman linebacker Vilami Latu added a fumble recovery.
Defensive end Davon Coleman accounted for eight points in the second quarter alone as he reeled in a one-yard touchdown catch, the first of his career, and three drives later he teamed up with Devil backer Carl Bradford for the Devils’ first safety since Nov. 3, 2012.
Arizona State’s defense intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble, and forced Colorado to six three-and-outs on 12 drives in the win.
Senior running back RJ Robinson scored his first career touchdown on a one-yard dive in the third quarter.
