Homa and Kim Finish Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Former Cal men’s golfer Max Homa (72-64-67-69-71-66 – 409, -23) and current junior Michael Kim (68-69-66-70-74-75 – 422, -10) finished the final stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament with Homa tying for sixth overall and Kim tying for 56th. Homa’s top-10 finish earned him an exemption to play on the 2014 Web.com Tour until the third periodic re-order of the tour’s 2014 season.

“It means a lot to me to make it onto a tour of this caliber,” Homa said. “I’m looking forward to testing my game with the best players.”

“There is no surprise here,” Cal head coach Steve Desimone added. “Max has been one of the best players for several months through college, amateur and PGA TOUR events. He just seems to be getting better and better and now he’s into the third re-shuffle of the Web.com Tour. I imagine by the time that comes around he will have earned his tour card. He’s playing so well that the sky is the limit.” 

Homa turned professional earlier this year following the end of his collegiate career at Cal, while Kim was one of three amateurs playing in the event.

Homa, who started the day tied for ninth, assured his top-10 finish by firing a final round six-under par 66 Tuesday at the PGA West Jack Nicklaus Course that included seven birdies with three sets coming in back-to-back fashion on the par-five fourth and par-four fifth holes, the par-four 10th and par-five 11th, and the par-five 15th and par-four 16th. He had his other birdie on the par-five seventh and his lone bogey on the par-four 14th.

Kim fell 39 spots from where he started the day tied for 17th with a three-over par 75. He got into the red for the only time in an up-and-down round also on the Nicklaus Course with a birdie on the par-five fourth but gave the stroke right back with a bogey on the par-four fifth. He was two-over par for the round with back-to-back bogeys on the par-four ninth and 10th holes but answered with back-to-back birdies on the par-five 11th and par-three 12th holes to get his round back to even before a bogey on the par-four 14th and a double on the par-five 15th gave him his three-over par score.

“Obviously it was a very disappointing day for Michael,” Desimone said. “Every Golden Bear was rooting for him to finish in the top 10 or make a run at this thing.”

Zack Fischer (75-67-66-65-64-64 – 401, -31) won the event by two shots over Scott Pinckney (68-67-67-65-68-68 – 403, -29A) to earn an exemption for the entire 2014 Web.com Tour. Players that finished from 11th through 45th place including ties are exempt until the second periodic re-order of the tour’s 2014 campaign.
