ASU Water Polo's Chiappini Named Brazilian Player of the Year
TEMPE – Arizona State University water polo newcomer Izabella Chiappini has been announced as the Brazilian Water Polo Player of the Year.
Chiappini, who signed with the Sun Devils as part of last year’s signing class, will join the team for the upcoming Spring season that begins Jan. 24.
Chiappini’s Pinheiros Water Polo Club recently won the Brazilian National Championship and was led by the Sun Devil freshman, who had five goals against Paulistano in the championship game – a 14-12 victory for Pinheiros.
The Brazilian native scored 41 goals in the course of the season and was thus honored as the top goal scorer in the league as well as the National Player of the Year (selected out of both the men and women).
Chiappini is a three-time South American champion and a two-time MVP while also earning the Bronze medal at the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara.
She was recently a member of the eighth-place team at the Junior World Youth Championships in Australia where she was named to the tournament All-Star team and was the second-top scorer in the tournament.
Chiappini is expected to make an immediate impact on the Sun Devil team in the Spring on a squad that returns a plethora of talent in the likes of All-Americans Ao Gao and E.B. Keeve but will be looking to replace graduated superstars Alicia Brightwell and Shannon Haas.
