Koval, Morris Earn TDS Honors
Top Drawer Soccer honored a pair of Stanford men’s soccer players Monday, naming senior JJ Koval to its Best XI Second Team and Jordan Morris to its Freshman Best XI First Team.
For Koval, the Cardinal captain, Monday’s honor adds to his list for 2013. The Camarillo native was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team as well as to the NSCAA’s All-Far West Region Second Team. Last week, he earned an invite to the MLS Player Combine, set for Jan. 10-14 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
One of the top holding midfielders and aerialists in the conference, Koval also made his presence felt in front of the goal, scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another in 2013. That assist came in a familiar situation, as the Camarillo native won a 50-50 ball which was picked up and bolted home by Aaron Kovar for the winner in a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 5 California that sealed the Cardinal’s berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Morris, entering the year as one of the top freshman in the country, proved that notion as he was selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team and NSCAA All-Far West Region Third Team in 2013. The Mercer Island, Wash. native also led all Pac-12 freshmen in assists (seven) and points (19) while finishing second with six goals. His six goals and 19 points were also second on the Cardinal while his seven assists paced the squad.
The duo helped pace the Cardinal to a 10-7-4 overall record in 2013 and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009. Stanford reached the Round of 16 before falling to No. 2 seed Washington, 1-0.
