ASU Sets Attendance Record, Falls To Stanford In Pac-12 Football Championship Game
Stanford 38, Arizona State 14
Dec. 7, 2013, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
The game started in an early shootout, as No. 8 Stanford exchanged touchdowns with the 11th-ranked Sun Devils, but the Cardinal’s offense prevailed to win the Pac-12 Championship, 38-14, in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils set a new Pac-12 Championship game attendance record with a turnout of 69,575 for the conference match-up at Sun Devil Stadium.
ASU running back D.J. Foster led the team with 142 all-purpose yards, including 80 receiving yards and 62 rushing yards, and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Sun Devils.
Linebacker Chris Young tallied eight tackles, including a sack and four tackles for loss, to lead the defense in tackles for the fourth consecutive game and the seventh time this season.
Stanford was able to score once more halfway through the quarter and again on its first play of the second quarter. With a score of 28-7, the Cardinal seemed to have all the momentum until about halfway through the quarter, when defensive lineman Davon Coleman sacked Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan for a loss of seven yards and pumped new life into both the Sun Devils and their home crowd.
Another sack by defensive tackle Will Sutton on Stanford’s next series and tight ASU defense on the corresponding downs led to a three-and-out. A quick screen from Kelly to Foster led to a 65-yard touchdown as the running back quick-stepped downfield, for Arizona State’s second score of the game.
The Sun Devils started the second half down 14-28, and both a sack on Hogan for a loss of 10 yards by linebacker Carl Bradford and a Sun Devil stop on third down held Stanford to a field goal.
The Devils managed to drive downfield twice in the third quarter, but a missed field goal by Gonzalez and a turnover on downs at the goal line gave Stanford the ball back to begin the fourth. The Cardinal would go on to score again to increase its lead to 38-14 with about 12 minutes left in the game.

A 65-yard touchdown catch and a 51-yard touchdown run by sophomore DJ Foster were the two longest plays the Stanford defense gave up all season.
