Southern Scuffle Results: Day 1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Stanford redshirt senior Ryan Mango and sophomore Evan Silver have advanced to the quarterfinals of the third-annual Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. As a team, Stanford has posted 25.0 team points and sits in 15th place.

Mango, ranked fifth nationally at 133 pounds, had a bye to start the tournament. He reached the quarterfinals with an 8-2 decision over Shayden Terukina of Iowa State and an 18-7 major decision against Air Force’s Gregory Rinker. Mango moves to 16-1 on the season and will face Penn State’s James Gulibon in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Silver went 3-0 at 125 pounds to earn a match-up with Penn State’s Nicholas Megaludis in the quarterfinals. Ranked 12th nationally, Silver registered major decisions over Kevon Powell of Ohio (9-1) and Hunter Wood of Army (12-2) before edging Old Dominion’s Brandon Jeske, 8-7.

Five other Cardinal wrestlers are still alive in the tournament and will compete in the consolation bracket on Thursday. Senior 174-pounder Kyle Meyer went 3-1, while senior 157-pounder Bret Baumbach, redshirt freshman 184-pounder Zach Nevills and true freshman 125-pounder Tommy Pawelski all went 2-1 on the day. Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson, ranked No. 18 at 165 pounds, finished 1-1.
