Ogwumike, Plum voted Pac-12 players of the week again
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5. STANFORD’s Chiney Ogwumike was voted the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the fifth time this season and WASHINGTON’s Kelsey Plum was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the third time.
Senior forward Chiney Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas) led No. 4/4 Stanford to a sweep of Oregon and Oregon State while also becoming the Pac-12’s all-time leading rebounder. On Friday against the Ducks, she broke the Conference’s all-time mark grabbing 14 boards, surpassing the mark held by former teammate Kayla Pedersen (1,266, 2008-11). Ogwumike added another 13 rebounds to make her career total 1,284. For the weekend, she averaged 32.0 points and 13.5 rebounds while shooting 59.6 percent from the field. She tallied 33 and 31 points against UO and OSU, respectively, bringing her total of 30-point games this season to six. With back-to-back double-doubles, she has logged 10 this season.
Freshman guard Kelsey Plum (Poway, Calif.) led Washington to a 2-1 record last week, averaging 21.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. On Monday, she led four double-digit scorers, tallying a career-high 25 points, including making a career-best six threes, to help the Huskies hold off UC Irvine, 72-69. She also led all scorers in the team’s Conference opener, scoring 23 in another close victory, 55-52, over Arizona. For the week, Plum made 10-of-22 attempts from 3-point range and improved her scoring average to 18.4 points per game.
It is Ogwumike’s fifth weekly honor this season and the 14th of her career, a Pac-12 record. It is also Stanford’s Conference-leading 95th weekly selection all-time. Plum receives the weekly honor for the third time this season.
A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.
The Cardinal hits the road this weekend traveling for a game against Utah on Friday, January 10, then closes out the weekend with 17th-ranked Colorado on Sunday, Jan. 12. Meanwhile, the Huskies host Washington State and attempt to extend a 35-game win streak over the Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 11. All three games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
