Pac-12 announces gymnastics weekly honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Dec. 30- Jan. 5. CALIFORNIA’s Alicia Asturias was named the Gymnast of the Week, STANFORD’s Amanda Spinner was voted Specialist of the Week, and CALIFORNIA’s Charlie Owens was selected as the Freshman/Newcomer of the week.

Captain Alicia Asturias started off her senior campaign strong by turning in four hit routines to claim the top all-around spot with a score of 39.175 at the NorCal Meet in Sacramento. Her 9.85 on beam was a career high, topping her previous best of 9.80 set last season vs. Nebraska. The Granite Bay, Calif. native led the Golden Bears with three event title on beam, floor and all-around. The 22nd ranked CALIFORNIA begin the season with the programs second highest team score in a season opener with a 194.650.

Cardinal senior, Amanda Spinner, tallied a 9.850 on beam and placed first to help lead Stanford to a season opening win at the NorCal Quad meet hosted by Sacramento State. The gymnast from Danville, Calif., tied for the meets top spot and delivered a clutch performance when the gymnast before her fell. Spinner performed a solid routine that allowed the Cardinal to stay in the meet early. 

The freshman from Alta Loma, Calif., Owens scored 38.950 for a second place finish in the all-around. Owens took second only to fellow teammate and Gymnast of the Week Alicia Asturias. Her collegiate debut included a top ten finish in three other events, finishing sixth on vault with a 9.75, ninth on beam with a 9.775 and eight on floor with a 9.75.  Owens performance helped the Golden Bears to a 194.650 final score and a second place finish.

Gymnast of the Week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008. This is the second year for Freshman/Newcomer of the Week honors.

The Cardinal next host Georgia on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. PT in Maples Pavilion. The Golden Bears travel to Denver on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. MT where they will face the University of Denver.
