Pac-12 announces women's basketball players of the week

Jan 13, 2014

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the week of Jan. 6-12. STANFORD’s Chiney Ogwumike was voted the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the sixth time this season and OREGON STATE’s Sydney Wiese was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the first time this year.

Senior forward Chiney Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas) led No. 4/4 Stanford to a road sweep of Utah and No. 17/14 Colorado, averaging 32.0 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game over the weekend as the Cardinal extended its winning streak to 14. On Friday against the Utes, she recorded 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in a 87-61 win. She followed that performance with a 34-point, 16-rebound day in an 87-77 victory against the Buffs, the team’s fourth win over a ranked opponent this year. Ogwumike added her first two three-pointers of the season while shooting 64.1 percent from the field over the two games. Ogwumike has posted four 30-point games in a row, bringing her total to eight this season while recording double-doubles in four-consecutive games and 12 times overall.

Freshman guard Sydney Wiese (Phoenix, Ariz.) helped Oregon State pick up its first Conference win in an 88-80 victory over in-state rival Oregon, scoring a career-high 24 point on 7-of-14 shooting with all of her attempts coming from behind the arc. She added career-highs in assists (9) and rebounds (7), while her three free throws in the final minute helped secure the victory. Her seven made three pointers tied for third most in OSU single-game history and the nine assists were the highest for an individual player in the last five years. Wiese is currently 14th in the nation in three-point percentage, converting 45.8 percent of her attempts.

It is Ogwumike’s sixth weekly honor this season, including her second in a row, and Pac-12 record 15th of her career. It is also Stanford’s Conference-leading 96th weekly selection all-time. Wiese’s first-career weekly honor is Oregon State’s first of the season and third since the award was announced last year.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13.

The Cardinal’s road trip continues as it travels to face Arizona on Friday, Jan. 17 and then wraps up the weekend facing 19th-ranked Arizona State for a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday showcase on Monday, Jan. 20. Oregon State plays three games over the next week, facing the Ducks at home tonight at 7 p.m. PT, then traveling to Los Angeles to face USC and UCLA on Friday and Monday, respectively. All five games will air on Pac-12 Networks.
