UCLA to Host Women’s Water Polo Invitational, Jan. 18-19

Fifth-year head coach Brandon Brooks welcomes 16 returning letterwinners, including his top five scorers and starting goalkeeper, when the third-ranked UCLA women’s water polo team opens the 2014 season this weekend hosting the UCLA Invitational at the Spieker Aquatics Center on campus.

Competing teams include Concordia (Irvine, Calif.), Cal Baptist, Loyola Marymount and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams CS Bakersfield and San Jose State.

In 2013 the Bruins were 28-7 and finished third nationally and third in the MPSF Tournament. Top returning 2014 scorers include, junior All-America attacker Emily Donohoe (70 goals), sophomore All-America attacker Rachel Fattal (68 goals), sophomore center Alexa Tielmann (29 goals), junior attacker Danielle Ferraro (28 goals) and sophomore defender Alys Williams (27 goals). Williams earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in 2013.

In addition, the Bruins return junior All-America goalkeeper Sami Hill, who set a school record last season by making 320 saves.

Finally, with his first victory this weekend, Brooks will capture his 100th career coaching victory.

Admission to this weekend’s invitational is free. UCLA will begin play each day with the first scheduled game, slated for 10 a.m. The complete schedule is listed below.

Sat., Jan. 18

10 a.m.: UCLA vs. Concordia (Irvine)
11:15 a.m.: San Jose State vs. Cal Baptist
12:30 p.m.: Loyola Marymount vs. CS Bakersfield

5:15 p.m.: San Jose State vs. CS Bakersfield
