Men’s Crew Nominated For Seattle Sports Story Of The Year

Jan 23, 2014

SEATTLE – Wednesday night the Seattle Sports Commission hosted their 79th annual Seattle Sports Star of the Year awards, where numerous husky players and teams were nominated across all categories.

UW men’s Rowing was nominated for Sports Story of the Year for sweeping all races at last year’s IRA Championships for the third year in a row. Other nominees in the category included the Eastlake Little League Team, the renovation of Husky Stadium, the Seahawks historic season, the UW volleyball team’s run to the Final Four and lastly the Seattle University men’s and women’s soccer teams for both qualifying for the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in school history.

It was the Eastlake Little League Team who ended up winning the category, who gained national attention on their way to barely missing out on the Little League World Series title. Their run ended with a 14-13 loss to a team from Westport, Conn. They ended the season 20-3 and ranked third in the country.

"It's an honor to be nominated for the teams performance last year,” head coach Michael Callahan said. “It really was a crew for the ages.  Seattle has always appreciated and celebrated the Husky Crew and to be recognized in front of all the best sports performances from our region and is really special.  Another reason it's so unique to row in this city and Pacific Northwest.  Congratulations to all the nominees and winners! It's been a great year."
