No. 4 Cal Men’s S&D Defeats Arizona State, 178-113
BERKELEY – In its first Pac-12 dual meet of the season, the No. 4-ranked Cal men’s swimming and diving team (4-0) won 12 races on the way to a 178-113 dual meet victory over conference foe Arizona State Friday (Jan. 24) at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears were placed by two wins apiece from sophomore Josh Prenot and freshman Ryan Murphy.
Prenot captured the 100 breast (55.47) and 400 IM (3:51.45), while Murphy placed first in the 100 (44.27) and 200 free (1:37.51).
Cal also won both relays, winning the 200 medley relay (1:27.20) behind the swims of senior Tony Cox, junior Chuck Katis, senior Marcin Tarczynski and junior Seth Stubblefield; and the final event – the 200 free relay (1:19.03) of sophomore Tyler Messerschmidt, Murphy, junior Fabio Gimondi and Stubblefield.
Additional individual winners for the Bears were freshman Janardan Burns in the 1000 free (9:18.72), sophomore Jacob Pebley in the 100 back (47.97), Stubblefield in the 50 free (20.00), junior Jesse Ryckman in the 200 back (1:49.08), Katis in the 200 breast (2:00.19), junior Will Hamilton in the 500 free (4:30.30).
“It had been a long time since we had raced together as a team,” said Cal coach David Durden. “It was great to see us race consistently throughout the meet. We are looking forward to racing against a tough Arizona team tomorrow.”
Arizona, led by 2013 NCAA Swimmer of the Year Kevin Cordes, is ranked fifth nationally after placing third at the 2013 NCAA meet, trailing only Michigan and Cal..
