No. 4 Cal Men’s S&D Powers Past Arizona, 206-92
BERKELEY – Led by two individual titles apiece from seniors Jeremy Bagshaw and Marcin Tarczynski, junior Seth Stubblefield and freshman Ryan Murphy; the No. 4-ranked Cal men’s swimming and diving team (5-0) overpowered No. 5 Arizona, 206-92, Saturday (Jan. 25) before a packed house (1,500) at Spieker Aquatics Complex (believed to be the largest swimming crowd in school history).
The Golden Bears also won the 200 medley relay (1:26.89, Murphy, junior Chuck Katis, sophomore Josh Prenot, sophomore Tyler Messerschmidt) and the 400 free relay (Murphy, junior Fabio Gimondi, Stubblefield, Tarczynski) to capture 11 of 13 swimming events. The only swimming events Cal did not win were the 100 and 200 breast, which was won by Arizona’s 2013 NCAA swimmer of the Year Kevin Cordes, who set a new Spieker Aquatics Complex record in the 100 breast with a time of 52.92.
“This weekend (Cal had defeated ASU, 178-113, Friday) was a good jump start into our spring and help us get ready the championship season,” said Cal coach David Durden, whose squad has now won 12 straight dual meets carrying over from last year. “We still have some things we need to work through, but I am pleased overall. We’ll take a look at these meets and try to find areas where we can improve.”
Highlights for the Bears on Senior Day (honoring Cal seniors Bagshaw, Tarczynski, Tony Cox, Shayne Fleming, Scott Farley, diver Grayson Huston, Ryan Studebaker, Jamie Tyrrell, diver Tyler Pullen) included Bagshaw winning the 1000 free (8:57.41, fastest time in the nation this year) and 500 free (4:24.30); and Tarczynski winning the 100 (47.84) and 200 fly (1:45.99) in their final home meet.
