Men’s Golf Looks To Rebound In Hawai’i
CORVALLIS, Ore. – After a tough start to the spring season, the Oregon State men’s golf team looks to bounce back when it competes Thursday through Saturday at the 24th Annual Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai’i.
FIELD (20): Oregon State, Arizona State, Auburn, Colorado, CSU-Monterey Bay, Georgia Tech, Hawai’i, Hawai’i-Hilo, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Osaka Gakuin University, San Jose State, Stanford, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UC Davis, UCLA, USC and Washington.
COURSE: The tournament will be held at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
BEAVERS’ LINEUP: Oregon State will go with a lineup of senior David Fink, juniors Alex Franklin and Scott Kim and freshmen Kevin Chen and Kevin Murphy.
FORMAT: Three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes each day. The top-four individuals from each five-member team with the lowest scores for each 18-hole round constitute the scoring members for that given round.
TEE TIMES: Shotgun start each day beginning at 7:30 a.m. Hawai’i time (9:30 a.m. PT).
LAST TIME OUT: Oregon State opened its spring season with an 11th-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson last week after shooting a 48-over 303-299-298--900 at the par-71, 7,262-yard Sewailo Golf Club.
Alex Franklin was the steadiest Oregon State golfer over the three rounds, as he carded a 6-over 74-72-73--219 to finish in a tie for 17th place. He had two birdies in each of the three rounds and had nothing worse than a bogey on the final day.
David Fink, who struggled during the 36-hole opening day, responded in a big way in the final round. He started on the 11th hole and was 2 over after his first nine before catching fire with two eagles, two birdies and five pars for a blistering 6-under 29 over the final stretch. The lefty moved from a tie for 55th place into a tie for 23rd with an 8-over 79-75-67--221.
Kevin Murphy finished in a tie for 37th place with a 12-over 73-76-76--225, while Conner Kumpula shot a 25-over 80-76-82--238 for a tie for 74th and Brian Jung finished in sole 76th with a 26-over 77-78-84--239.
LAST YEAR AT AMER ARI INVITATIONAL: Oregon State concluded its first tournament of the 2013 spring season in 14th place at the 23rd Annual Amer Ari Invitational with a 9-over 289-288-296-873 at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
David Fink fired a 3-under 69 in the final round and finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a then career-best 9-under 68-70-69--207 to finish in second place. His previous best three-round score was a 4-under 209 at the Gifford Collegiate where he concluded the 2012 fall season with a tie for second.
Nick Sherwood finished in a tie for 80th with a 7-over 74-72-77--223, while Nick Chianello wrapped up play in a tie for 102nd with a 13-over 74-78-77-229. Chris Tedesco saw his first career action as a member of the Beavers’ team and finished in a tie for 106th with a 16-over 76-78-78--232.
