Head Coach Brandon Brooks announced the signing this week of four outstanding California players to the UCLA women’s water polo program. Signing National Letters of Intent were Alexis Angermund (Long Beach, CA / Wilson), Devin Grab (South Pasadena, CA / South Pasadena HS), Grace Reego (Granite Bay, CA / Granite Bay HS) and Alessandra Vilches (Woodland Hills, CA / Augura HS).
“We feel these players will make a strong impact on our program in the near future,” said Brooks. “This group fills specific needs for our team, and features plenty of speed, scoring ability and defensive skill. We’re thrilled that these players chose to attend UCLA.”
Angermund, a two-year member of the U.S. Women’s Youth National Team, helped lead the United States to the gold medal in the UANA Youth Pan American Championship last August. She scored 12 goals in the tournament, including four in the medal round and two vs. Canada in the gold medal game. At Wilson High, she has led the Bruins in scoring the last two seasons, earning All-CIF and All-Moore League honors.
Grab helped lead the U.S. Women’s Youth Team to the 2013 Canada Cup title in December. She was also a member of the 2012 FINA Youth World Championship team, and scored goals against Russia and Greece as the USA finished fourth. In a 16-7 quarterfinal victory against New Zealand, she scored four goals. At South Pasadena HS, she has scored more than 400 goals in her career, while earning All-Rio Hondo League MVP and First-Team All-CIF honors three straight years. She also earned varsity letters in swimming and volleyball.
Reego has scored more than 300 career goals for Granite Bay, while also earning varsity letters in swimming. A three-time all-league and Granite Bay MVP, Reego earned NorCal All-America honors as a player and student (2012 and 2013). A veteran club player with Sacramento Water Polo and American River, she has also played for the U.S. Olympic Developmental Program. She was a member of the 2013 ODP Team that won a silver medal in the regional championships.
Vilches has played in the U.S. ODP system since 2011, earning a spot on the cadet team that won a silver medal in the Pan Am Games in Puerto Rico. At Agoura High, she has excelled athletically and academically, capturing 2012 Marmonte League MVP, First-Team All-CIF and Ventura County Star Player of the Year honors, and Principal’s Scholar-Athlete mention. Last year, she scored 109 goals, and was credited with 33 assists, 41 steals and 11 blocks.
All four players signed their NLIs during the November signing period.
