Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC junior Roberto Quiroz and WASHINGTON STATE junior Elizaveta Luzina were voted Pac-12 men’s and women’s tennis Players of the Week for play from Feb. 11-17, the Conference office announced today.
Quiroz (Guayaquil, Ecuador) helped drive the Trojans to a second-place finish in the ITA National Men’s Indoor Championships with undefeated play in singles and doubles. He opened the competition with the point-clinching doubles victory in the Round of 16 against No. 14 Tennessee and was up by one set in his singles match when the Trojans secured the win. In the quarterfinals against No. 6 Baylor, Quiroz won across the board, getting the first doubles win and then earning a powerful straight-set victory over Mate Zsiga. In the crosstown rivalry clash against No. 2 UCLA, Quiroz upset No. 51 Mackenzie McDonald with a straight-set victory that helped USC upset the Bruins, with his doubles match going unfinished. The junior finished the weekend with two suspended matches as No. 5 Ohio State captured the doubles point, but Quiroz was up by one set in his singles match and two points in the doubles play.
Luzina (Moscow, Russia) continued her hot start to the season as she won both singles and both doubles matches over the weekend as Washington State posted back-to-back victories over nationally-ranked teams. Against 66th-ranked Fresno State, Luzina defeated Sophie Watts, the nation’s 41st-ranked player in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. The junior followed that victory with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Shan Blecher of No. 65 San Diego. The Moscow, Russia, native has posted a 21-3 record this season, going 10-1 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 slot. In doubles play, she and Lize Leenknecht swept both matches, defeating Fresno State, 8-4, and San Diego, 8-6. With the wins, the duo improves to 19-2 overall and 9-1 in dual play.
