Men’s Golf Set For Weekend Tournament
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s golf team returns to action when it competes at the Wyoming Cowboy Desert Intercollegiate Friday through Sunday in Palm Desert, Calif.
There will be no live scoring available.
FIELD (23): Oregon State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Cal Poly, Colorado, Denver, George Mason, Idaho, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska, Oregon, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, TCU, Texas Tech, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UT Arlington and Wyoming
COURSE: The tournament will be held at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club, the host site of the PGA’s Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
BEAVERS’ LINEUP: Oregon State will go with a lineup of senior David Fink, juniors Alex Franklin and Scott Kim, sophomore Brian Jung and freshman Kevin Murphy.
FORMAT: Three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes each day. The top-four individuals from each five-member team with the lowest scores for each 18-hole round constitute the scoring members for that given round.
QUOTING HEAD COACH JON REEHOORN: "Last year we went to this event and rejuvenated our spring season. I'm confident the same thing will happen this week.
"The conditions at home have been extreme, but the guys have done everything they can to put in the work and be prepared for this week.
"We need to treat every week the exact same; as an opportunity to play our best and be our best when we step on the first tee. Every shot for here is very important and we need to make sure we treat it as such."
LAST YEAR AT WYOMING COWBOY DESERT INTERCOLLEGIATE: Oregon State finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with an 11-over 291-291-293--875 at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club to finish fifth in the 17-team field and just one stroke behind San Francisco and Texas Tech, which tied for third with a 10-over 874. TCU took the team title with a convincing 19-under 845 and St. Mary’s finished second with a 6-over 870.
Nick Sherwood posted the best finish in his career with a tie for fifth place after a 1-under 73-70-72--215 to better the tie for sixth he had as a sophomore at the Bandon Dunes Championship in 2011. Nick Chianello finished a stroke back with an even-par 70-74-72--216 that put him in a tie for eighth place.
Matt Rawitzer did his best work on the front nine over the weekend and finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 4-over 74-73-73--220, while David Fink posted an 8-over 74-74-76--224 for a tie for 36th to end his streak of two consecutive second-place finishes. Brian Jung struggled in the final round and tied for 70th overall with a 17-over 77-76-80--233.
Sherwood led the Beavers with 10 birdies over the three days, while Chianello and Jung each had nine, and Rawitzer and Fink each finished with eight.
LAST TIME OUT: Oregon State shot a 10-under 285-281-288--854 to finish in 14th place at the 20-team Amer Ari Invitational that was held Feb. 6-8 at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings’ Course in Waikoloa, Hawai’i.
David Fink fired a career-best 6-under 66 in the final round and finished the three-day event with a 13-under 70-67-66--203 to equal the second-lowest three-round score in school history (Vincent Johnson holds the record with a 14-under 202 at the Northwest Collegiate Classic in 2005). He finished in sole fourth place and now has five top-five finishes in the past two seasons.
Kevin Murphy finished in a tie for 56th place with a 1-under 72-69-74--215, Alex Franklin tied for 77th with a 2-over 72-72-74--218, Kevin Chen shot a 6-over 75-73-74--222 that put him in a tie for 94th place and Scott Kim finished with a 7-over 71-77-75--223.
