T&F’s Jelmini Wraps Competition At USATF Indoor

USATF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Arizona State track and field’s redshirt senior Anna Jelmini placed 11th overall in the shot put at the USATF Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Jelmini’s best toss was marked at 16.57m (54-4.50), her third-best distance this season.
“The USATF Championships is one of the biggest meets, and featured some of the toughest competition that Anna (Jelmini) will see this year, perhaps even more than at the NCAA meet,” throws coach David Dumble said. “Anna struggled with her first three throws, and just missed the finals, but I think she now understands what she’ll need to adjust for MPSF next week and the NCAA meet in three weeks.”
ASU freshman Magdalyn Ewen competed unattached in the shot put and placed 10th with a toss of 16.57m (54-4.50).
“Maggie (Ewen) ended her indoor competition with a season best, which is great progress for her redshirt year,” Dumble added.
The ASU track and field teams will make the trek to Seattle, Wash., next week for the MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 28-March 1.
A host of former Sun Devils also competed throughout the weekend, with Ryan Whiting winning the shot put with a toss of 22.23m (72-11.25). Whiting’s win qualified him to compete for Team USA at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, to be held in Sopot, Poland on March 7-9, 2014.
Chris Benard placed second in the long jump with a mark of 8.08m (26-6.25), but was short of the qualifying standard by eight centimeters. Benard also placed second in the triple jump at 16.99m (55-9.00), but was a centimeter out of the qualifying standard.
Also in the men’s shot put, Jordan Clarke placed fourth with a season-best 20.78m (68-2.25) for fourth overall.
In the men’s 3,000m, Zach Zarda placed 15th in the deepest race in men’s history at 8:25.78.
Chelsea Cassulo placed sixth in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 21.96m (72-0.75).
