Women’s Golf Shatters School Record

PEORIA, Ariz. The Oregon State women’s golf team shattered its three-round school record by posting a 10-over 874 at the Westbrook Spring Invitational that concluded Monday. The previous three-round school record was a 20-over 884 at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Kauai, Hawai’i in 1998.

The Beavers finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 10-over 283-297-294--874 at the par-72, 6,269-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club to finish in a tie for sixth place in the 14-team field.

“Today we played well,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “We struggled a bit coming in but overall I am very pleased with the way they are approaching each shot, and they continue to improve their ball striking. We will spend time this week on short game and wedges in practice. Preparation for UCLA/Pepperdine begins today. We will look at what we did well and what we need to work on to continue to improve.”

Senior Seshia Telles and sophomore Chelsea Saelee both tied for 29th place with a 3-over 219, as Telles shot three consecutive 1-over 73’s and Saelee had scores of 70-75-74.

Senior Lauren Sewell and junior Anica Yoo each finished with a 5-over 221 to tie for 39th place. Sewell tied the school record with a 4-under 68 in the opening round and followed that up with 76-77, while Yoo got better each round with 76-73-72.

Freshman Krissy Peterson, who made her first career appearance with the team, finished in a tie for 55th with a 9-over 72-78-75--225.

Ohio State won the team title with a tournament record 26-under 281-278-279--838, breaking the previous mark that was held by Illinois in 2012.The Buckeyes were down six strokes to Oregon entering the final round. The Ducks finished second with 16-under par 279-274-295--848.

Ohio State’s Jessica Porvasnik was the wire-to-wire medalist with a tournament record 65-67-71--203, breaking the previous record of 205 by Nora Lucas of Illinois in 2012.

The Beavers return to action next week at the Bruin Wave Invitational in a tournament that will be played on Monday and Tuesday in Tarzana, Calif.
