Women’s Swimming Opens Pac-12 Championships
FEDERAL WAY, Wash.—The Arizona State women’s swimming team kicked off Pac-12 Championships Wednesday night from Federal Way, Wash. After the first of four days, the Sun Devils sit in ninth with 46 points.
Swimmers swam only two events on the first day, both relays. The team of Juanita Barreto, Kat Simonovic, Jaclyn Chavez and Tristin Baxter came in 7th in the 800 freestyle relay, barely missing out on 6th-place by .21 of a second. Together they swam a time of 7:11.26.
The other event swam on Wednesday was the 200 medley relay, but the team consisting of some of the top Sun Devil swimmers by the likes of Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, Tory Houston, Marina Spadoni and Melanie Busch were given a DQ for a 15-meter violation. Because of the DQ the Devils received no points, hence the lower score on day one. The Pac-12 Championships continues through Saturday with plenty of opportunities to score more points.
Preliminaries begin on Thursday afternoon at noon MT with the 500 free and 200 individual medley before the commencement of Finals events for the fastest swimmers in the conference.
Here is the schedule for Thursday’s Finals:
4:00 p.m. MT:
-Women’s 1-meter diving
7:00-10:00 p.m. MT:
-200 individual medley
-200 freestyle relay
-Men’s 3-meter dive
