Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON sophomore Kevin Farin and USC junior Zoë Scandalis were voted Pac-12 men’s and women’s tennis Players of the Week for play from Feb. 25-Mar. 3, the Conference office announced today.
Farin (Etterbeek, Belgium) went 3-0 on the weekend to lead No. 42 Oregon to a pair of milestone victories. First, UO defeated Washington, 4-1, for the first time since Feb. 29, 2004. Two days later, the Ducks stunned No. 15 Boise State, the highest-ranked opponent UO has defeated in program history, by a 5-2 count. Farin earned a pair of straight-set singles wins at the No. 2 spot, defeating Washington’s Gal Hakak, 6-2, 7-5, before besting Boise State’s Nathan Sereke, 6-3, 7-5. In doubles, Farin teamed with Robin Cambier to defeat the Broncos’ top pairing of Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton, 8-3. Led by Farin’s play, Oregon improved its win streak to eight-straight matches while remaining undefeated at home. The sophomore is now 15-4 in singles play and 15-2 in doubles with Cambier.
Scandalis (San Diego, Calif.) had match-ending singles victories over ranked opponents in two USC dual-match wins. The junior posted an impressive come-from-behind win against No. 77 Ratnika Batra of 26th-ranked Texas after picking up a doubles win alongside Giuliana Olmos, and her singles victory was the tiebreaker that led to the Trojans’ 4-3 win against the Longhorns. Against No. 37 Saint Mary’s, Scandalis pulled out a tiebreaker against No. 69 Jamie Pawid en route to a 6-1 USC victory over the Gaels. The wins keep her on a five-match singles win streak with an 11-5 overall singles record and a 7-1 mark in dual matches. In doubles with Olmos, Scandalis is now 22-6 overall as the nation’s eighth-ranked pair. USC now holds a 9-2 overall record this season.
USC women’s tennis hosts No. 3 UCLA in a Pac-12 dual matchup on Friday, March 7 in their lone match of the weekend. Oregon men’s tennis travels to play against Portland on Sunday, March 9.
Men’s: Clay Thompson, UCLA.
Women’s: Julyette Steur, COLO.
