Cal Sweeps MPSF Awards For Second Time This Season

Mar 10, 2014

For the second time this season, Cal’s women’s water polo team has swept the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation weekly awards.

Freshman Roser Tarrago was named the MPSF/KAP 7 Player of the Week on Monday while freshman goalie Madeline Trabucco was tabbed as the MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week. It’s the first Player of the Week award for Tarrago, who was named the Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 17.

It’s the first Newcomer of the Week award for Trabucco, and the fifth time this season a Cal player has won the weekly award as the top newcomer in the conference.

Back on Jan. 27, junior Victoria Williams was named the Player of the Week and freshman Dora Antal was selected as the Newcomer of the Week.

Tarrago won the award this week after scoring six goals as the No. 4 Bears defeated No. 10 San Jose State in their MPSF opener. Tarrago’s output was especially pivotal given Cal played without Antal, the MPSF’s leading scorer.

Trabucco made 13 saves, including a handful of high-quality ones, to help the Bears preserve the win over the Spartans.

Cal (14-3, 0-1) travels to Los Angeles this weekend to take on No. 1 USC on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
