Utah on top after session one of Pac-12 gymnastics championships
BERKELEY, Calif. - The 2014 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championships kicked off this afternoon with top seeds No. 1 UTAH, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 STANFORD and defending champion No. 4 OREGON STATE competing in the first session in Haas Pavilion on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
Utah led after the first rotation with a 49.400 with Stanford close behind in second with a 49.350. Oregon State stood in third place (49.050), with UCLA coming in at fourth (49.000). After the second rotation, the Utes pulled away from the competition on bars with a score of 49.600. Stanford finished with 48.975 on floor and UCLA recorded 49.300 on beam to follow in the second and third spots, respectively. Oregon State was in fourth place with a score of 48.875 on vault. Utah stayed in first going into the final rotation earning 49.275 on beam with a total score of 148.725. Stanford scored 49.400 on vault to total 147.725 after three events to maintain their lead over UCLA (147.325). Defending Pac-12 champion Oregon State gained momentum on the uneven bars with a team score of 49.200, but still trailed with a total of 147.125.
The Utes came out on top of session one with a final score of 197.925. Stanford earned a 197.175, claiming the second-highest score of the session. UCLA and Oregon State followed behind totaling a 196.525 and 196.275, respectively.
At the conclusion of the first session, the Utes took the top spots on four of the five events with Tory Wilson currently in first in the all-around with a score of 39.450. Utah’sGeorgia Dabritz sits in first on the vault with a 9.950 and put forth a spectacular routine to claim the top spot on bars with a perfect 10. Dabritz and Nansy Damianova hold the top spots on floor, with both gymnasts recording a 9.950. UCLA’s Samantha Peszek is first on beam with 9.925 after the first session.
Session two will showcase host No. 5 CALIFORNIA, along with No. 6 ARIZONA, No. 7 ARIZONA STATE and No. 8 WASHINGTON. The action will resume at 6:30 p.m. PT and will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks.
