Pac-12 announces weekly baseball honors
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — WASHINGTON first baseman/outfielder Brian Wolfe has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and OREGON STATE left-handed pitcher Jace Fry has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 24-30, the Conference office announced Monday.
Wolfe, a Snohomish, Wash. native, picks up player of the week honors for the second-consecutive week after helping Washington to a non-conference midweek win over Gonzaga followed by a three-game road sweep at USC over the weekend. The senior went 7-for-12 (.583) with a 1.167 slugging percentage and .688 on-base percentage while scoring six times with two home runs and 10 RBI. Wolfe’s biggest game came Saturday in a 19-4 victory over the Trojans as he hit two home runs, collected eight RBI, scored four runs and tied a career-high with four hits. He is currently riding a six-game hitting streak, hitting .600 (12-for-20) during that stretch. Wolfe has fueled a red-hot Washington team that sits atop the Pac-12 after winning 10-straight and 17 of its last 18.
This is Wolfe’s second-career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Washington’s 61st all-time selection. The honor also marks the first time the Huskies have had the same player win in consecutive weeks since Kyle Conley in 2008.
Fry, a junior from Beaverton, Ore., propelled Oregon State to a series win at Arizona after helping them secure the 11-0 victory in the series rubber match on Sunday. He pitched seven shutout innings, giving up his first and only hit to lead off the eighth inning while facing just three batters over the minimum and issuing only two walks. The left-hander struck out five and did not allow an Arizona base runner into scoring position. Fry faced a minimum of three batters in six of his seven innings or work and set down the side four times. His stellar season continues as he moved to 5-1 with the win while posting a 1.81 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings in 2014.
Fry picks up his second-career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod and becomes the first pitcher to earn the honor twice this season. It also marks the 71st pitcher honoree overall for the Beavers.
The Huskies head back home for a huge showdown as they welcome top-10 ranked Oregon to town for a three game tilt at the newly renovated Husky Stadium. All three games will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks, kicking off Friday night at 7 p.m. PT. Oregon State will make the short trip north to Portland on Tuesday for a midweek contest against the Pilots before returning home to host Stanford Friday-Sunday in Corvallis. The Conference series gets underway Friday night at 5:05 p.m. PT.
