Offense Catches Fire In Tuesday’s Spring Practice
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State football continued spring practice with a two hour workout in helmets and shoulder pads on Rogers Field and in Martin Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars worked through their similar routine of individual position workouts, 7-vs.-7, some kickoff return and 11-vs.-11 team. WSU opened practice with field goals from redshirt-freshman Erik Powell from around 40 yards out.
The defense opened the team session with a big hit to stuff a running play but the offense answered in a big way. Following a long run from junior Teondray Caldwell, redshirt-senior quarterback Connor Halliday connected with redshirt-freshman running back Jamal Morrow who got behind the defense for a 70-plus yard touchdown. Halliday stayed hot, dropping in a pair of over-the-shoulder completions to redshirt-senior wideouts Kristoff Williams and Rickey Galvin before tossing touchdown passes to redshirt-senior wideout Vince Mayle in the left corner of the end zone and another to redshirt-junior wide receiver Drew Loftus in the right corner. The defense came up with a stop as redshirt-junior linebacker Darrly Monroe stopped Caldwell short of the goaline but Halliday closed his day with a soft-thrown touchdown pass to Galvin in the corner of the end zone.
Redshirt-freshman Luke Falk ran the second series but saw the defense open with a couple stops as freshman linebacker Dylan Hanser blew up a running play before redshirt-junior defensive tackle Xavier Cooper got to Falk for a “sack.” Sophomore cornerback Daquawn Brown kept his strong spring going with by breaking up a short pass attempt on a quick screen to a wide receiver. Falk regrouped and fit a tight completion to redshirt-junior wideout Tyler Baker in between a couple defenders. Brown made another play for the defense, coming up to pop senior running back Marcus Mason who had caught a short pass in the flat. Falk closed the day with touchdown pass over two defenders to Baker in the back of the end zone.
The Cougars will resume spring practice Thursday at 3 p.m.
